Albert Hammond (writer, recording artist): It's about everybody in the world because, when you're a kid, everybody wants to be in rock 'n' roll and they want to make it ? but most of us don't. 99.9% don't. But we're all still heroes. Like the song says "I watch the drivers on the freeway and every one is going home to a family, that waits on their hero." That's true. It's hard to be the breadwinner.

Throughout all the lean years
The sad in between years
Living behind my gun
Tryin' to be a hero
The glare of the spotlight
Shone down on my life
Blinding my schoolboy dreams
A Rock 'n' Roll hero
Tonight I'm dancing in my backyard
Nobody here to share my dream
A dancer with a score of zero
But I'm beautiful
I'm so beautiful
I watch the drivers on the freeway
And everyone is going home
To a family
That waits on their hero
Tonight I'm watching on the small screen
A man forgotten, just like me
Fell from the stratosphere to zero
But he's beautiful
Much more beautiful
A Rock 'n' Roll hero
(Instrumental)
From out of the lean years
The sad in between years
Hiding behind my gun
A Rock 'n' Roll hero
